Greenscents organic cleaning range

If you're thinking about making the switch to organic products this Organic September, you will probably be looking at more sustainable alternatives when choosing fruit, vegetables, dairy products, and other edibles.

But it's not just food and drink that can be organic. Every consumable we use – from soap and shampoo to household cleaners and washing up liquid – has the potential to be made with organic ingredients.

Products labelled as organic must meet strict regulations on how they have been produced – and Greenscents is the only certified organic laundry and household range in the UK.

There are many reasons why it's important to choose organic. For example, organic ingredients are produced without the use of artificial fertilisers, and with restricted use of pesticides – this not only helps to protect the environment, but organic farms are often more nature-friendly habitats that are richer in biodiversity.

Fewer pesticides, artificial additives and use of antibiotics makes organic products better for people too.

Greenscents products are made with at least 70% certified natural, organic ingredients, approved by the Soil Association. It's a small family business, based in South West England, that makes a range of household cleaning and laundry products in small batches.

We were sent some Greenscents Washing Up Liquid to try. Made with 81% organic ingredients, this comes in a range of scents – lavender, citrus and mint – as well as an unscented version.

After using the washing-up liquid for a week, it hadn't dried my hands out at all. Because there is no alcohol (which can dry out skin) or nasty chemicals, and because it's made with natural, organic and skin-softening ingredients, it's kind to hands – and is particularly suitable for people with asthma, allergies, eczema or dermatitis.

The glass bottle is attractive too, so it looks great on the kitchen counter!

We were also sent a mint-scented Greenscents Multi Surface Spray to try – also available in lavender, citrus or unscented. This is made with 97% organic ingredients.

The fantastic minty-fresh scent left our kitchen and bathroom smelling really clean. The all-purpose spray is easy to use and highly effective. It cleans without leaving streaks, residue or masses of hard-to-rinse soapy suds – just spray and wipe with a damp cloth.

Alongside Greenscent's use of organic ingredients, the range is an ethical and sustainable choice for many other reasons.

As well as Soil Association certification, Greenscents has been certified and accredited by several ethical organisations, as the products are vegan, cruelty-free and don't contain palm oil.

The reusable amber glass bottles can be refilled from 5l or 20l containers – and these larger containers can be sent back for cleaning and refilling, free of charge. The bottle caps are made from recyclable aluminium – and even the labels are vegan and sustainable! Each product comes with a sustainable, reusable pump or spray.

All boxes and packaging materials are reusable, recyclable and compostable, with paper bubble wrap and corrugated sleeves to protect products in transit, and recyclable paper packing tape.

The Greenscents products we tried were a pleasure to use – largely because the organic essential oils create a wonderful aroma that's a far-cry from the chemical smell of many standard household products.
