Cascayde sustainable gift wrapping

This article contains PR samples and affilliate links.

The UK uses around 227,000 miles of wrapping paper each year, and an estimated 83 square kilometres of paper isn't recycled. Some wrapping paper isn't recyclable at all – for example, many metallic papers or those covered in foil or glitter – so this will inevitably end up in landfill.

So choosing sustainable wrapping paper, and disposing of it responsibly by recycling, is an important way to cut Christmas waste. And the good news is that you can create beautifully presented gifts with lovely gift wrap that's also kind to the planet.

Cascayde – a family-run business, based in Scotland – produces a wide range of affordable, eco-friendly gift wrap and accessories. The wrapping paper is made with 100% recycled grass paper and printed with water-based ink – it's sustainably sourced and fully recyclable.

There are lots of lovely designs available, ranging from classic stripes to playful Santa faces; we particularly loved the whimsical gingerbread design. The wrap is strong and comes on a generous five-metre roll.

Paper tape

You can't recycle wrapping paper that has traditional, plastic tape on it. This is because the tape isn't recyclable – and if you put tape-covered paper into the recycling bin, it could contaminate the paper recycling, as the presence of plastic tape prevents the paper being properly mulched.

Using Cascayde recyclable paper tape is one solution. It's made from sustainably sourced kraft paper, using a natural, plant-based adhesive – and it's completely plastic free.

There are loads of different designs, including some lovely festive patterns. The tapes have a white or kraft paper finish – so you can create a contrasting effect, or choose a tape that blends in with your chosen paper design. It's available in two different widths – 24mm and 48mm – so you can find the right fit for any size of gift.

What we especially loved about this tape is how easy it is to use. There was no searching for the end, as there so often is when using traditional plastic tapes, and the tape is easy to tear from the roll. It's strong, and sticks really well – and is so much more fun than boring, clear plastic tape!

Biodegradable ribbon

For a final flourish on wrapped gifts, nothing beats a beautifully tied ribbon.

These stylish Cascayde ribbons are affordable, plastic free and reusable. They're plant based and 100% biodegradable – breaking down within 100 days when put into domestic or commercial compost. The ribbons are made from Tencel – this is produced from sustainably sourced wood, and manufactured using environmentally responsible processes. Tencel is also an eco-friendly alternative to cotton, using 3% of the irrigated water and emitting 83% less CO2 than conventional cotton production.

The ribbon can be reused again and again, so it's a cost-effective way to make gifts look gorgeous year after year – while cutting down on waste. What's really good about this ribbon is that it's machine-washable – so even if it gets a bit grubby, it can still be reused.
