Wild Times: Extraordinary Experiences Connecting with Nature in Britain

10/10/2016

Walking with wolves. Full moon meanders. Wild pottery.

If you are looking for an alternative to more hardcore adventure guides, Jini Reddy's unique new book provides a gentler and more holistic approach to connecting with the British countryside and urban nature.

In her new book – Wild Times: Extraordinary Experiences Connecting with Nature in Britain – Jini Reddy takes part in 26 unusual and unforgettable experiences across the breadth of the country.

She explores Yorkshire's ancient coastal paint palette, helps to rewild a forest in the Scottish Highlands with conservation charity Trees for Life, and goes on a barefoot walk in Wales.

She discovers wild medicine in the Cotswolds, and visits Somerset to take part in a bumblebee safari with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust.

“Last year, over a five month period, I travelled across Britain, exploring experiences that connect people with nature in diverse, creative, reflective, even ancient ways. You might call it 'green travel with soul',” said Jini of her first book.

“For me, it's about offering a more holistic vision of nature. It's part-narrative and part-practical guide, so – hopefully – both inspiration and an invitation.”

Wild Times suggests both mainstream and more offbeat pursuits that can be tried on days out, weekends and short breaks.

Eco-lovers, outdoors enthusiasts and nature novices alike will find inspiration and 'how to' information, as well as tips on how to cultivate a connection with the natural world in meaningful, everyday ways.

Each chapter focuses on a particular activity or experience, illustrated by colour photos and followed by practical 'how to get there and do it' information including accommodation where relevant, related experiences elsewhere in Britain and tips for recreating a little of the magic back home.

All of the experiences featured are offered by exciting, small, responsible ventures in England, Scotland and Wales.

A decade of journeys into wild places and natural landscapes around the world has seen Jini's relationship with nature evolve. She has written about nature-related experiences and eco-travel for a wide variety of national newspapers and magazines in the UK.

“Writing Wild Times has also given me a greater admiration for the passionate, dedicated women and men beavering away among our moors, coasts, hedgerows, woods, highlands, lowlands and cities – and who are just itching to share their wild wise ways with us all,” added Jini.
